(by William Shakespeare) This comedy, which is set in the post-war 1940s, revolves around two romantic pairings that emerge when a group of demobbed airmen arrive in the town.
The first pairing, between Claudio and Hero, is nearly scuppered by the mischief of a third party and his agents. The second, between Benedick and Beatrice, is nearly scuppered by their own refusal to look upon the other as a suitable partner. Only with the help of those around them does love blossom into its fullest bloom.
Thought to have been written in 1598 and 1599, debuted in the Autumn/Winter of 1599 and first published in 1600, this play continues to be one of Shakespeare’s most popular and performed plays.
